The Jardim da Manga was originally in the centre of the three cloisters of the Mosteiro da Santa Cruz. However, the legend says it gets its name from the fact that king D. João III sketched the design on his sleeve of his doublet, manga being the Portuguese for sleeve.

Notes

João de Ruão drew the plan and executed the bas-reliefs for the inside of the four chapels. This is one of the first architectural assignments entirely in renaissance style built in Portugal and its structure evokes the Fountain of Life.
