Parque de Santa Cruz

Santa Cruz, Coimbra

Presentation
Popularly known as ?Jardim da Sereia? (mermaid garden), this park was part of the wall of Santa Cruz monastery and dates back to the 17th century.

Notes

The entrance of the Garden is through a triumphal arch with three statues that represent Faith, Hope and Charity. Near the arch there are also two fortified towers in baroque style and a scenic cascade. Fonte da Nogueira has a statue representing a Triton (usually taken to be a mermaid) opening a dolphin?s mouth, and this is the reason why this garden is called popularly known as the ?Mermaid Garden?.
