History
Álvaro Pedro (Pedro dos Leitões), was born on the 6th March 1903, in Alpalhão, Anadia. When he was 17, he went to Brazil, to be the chef of the dining car of the train that journeyed between Brazil and Argentina.
When he came back to Portugal, he continued to work in hotels improving his work experience.
In 1943, he bought his first restaurant, that had a grocery store and a pub, where he used to sell suckling pig sandwiches to the few drivers who travelled the national EN1 road.
In 1949 he opened his restaurant ?Pedro dos Leitões? (the first restaurant in the world to sell Bairrada Oven-Roasted Suckling Pig) in the same spot where it is today. In 1982 he set up a partnership with his nephew Carlos Alberto Castela Simões, and the name of the restaurant changed into "Sociedade Hoteleira Pedro dos Leitões Lda.?
Álvaro Pedro died at 84, in 12th April 1987 and his nephew, Carlos Alberto, who took over , in 1996, offering to his children, Sandra, Pedro and Filipe, partnership. They now run the company with their father.
