Its construction was part of the urbanization project for this new area of the city. The project, designed by Porto landscape architect Jacinto Matos, is bordered by plane trees and a symmetrical arrangement of flower beds paved with Portuguese cobblestones. The garden was inaugurated in 1889 but was only completed in 1929.

Along this long avenue, you can see some monuments that are particularly interesting and important:

MONUMENT TO THE UNKNOWN SOLDIER

To mark the Portuguese presence and honor the memory of the soldiers who died in the Battle of La Lys, “Monuments to the Unknown Soldier” were erected in the country's main cities.

In Coimbra, the initiative came from a commission of the Coimbra Agency of the League of Combatants of the Great War, chaired by Captain Augusto dos Santos Conceição. The current monument was inaugurated on June 10, 1932. It is a limestone work by Luís Fernandes in partnership with architect António Varela, representing four soldiers in World War I uniforms, standing at attention and facing the four directions around a column topped by a projectile that supports the city's coat of arms.

MONUMENT TO LUIS DE CAMÕES

A sculptural ensemble consisting of a column topped by a bronze laurel wreath, set on a pedestal containing a bronze statue of a lion. It was an initiative of the Students of the University of Coimbra, on the occasion of the celebrations of the three hundredth anniversary of the poet's death, and was inaugurated on May 8, 1881.

In 2005, on the initiative of the Coimbra City Council, the monument was transferred to its current location on September 14.
