Built on top of the Almedina Arch, its function was to guard and defend the main gateway into the city walls. It may have been built during the reign of King Sesnando (11th century) and has been renovated and remodeled several times. It was the seat of municipal and judicial power. It currently houses the Walled City Center and Interpretation Center, which tells the story of the wall and the city in the Middle Ages.
The Almedina Arch was the main gate of the medieval wall. The oldest part of the gate dates back to the 9th century and was originally made up of two cubicles joined by an arch. Its current appearance may be the result of a renovation in the early 16th century, ordered by King Manuel I.
