History

Jorge M. Ferreira Rama is a Bairradino businessman, born in the municipality of Mealhada. He inherited from his father, Joaquim Rama, the taste for vineyards and wine. From the olive oil production activities in his olive press and the production and industrial classification of eggs, in 2002 he took over the vineyards and the vinification of his grapes and bottling, under the Rama family brand, of his Bairrada wines and sparkling wines in his own plant, but insufficient for his aspirations and ambition as an entrepreneur by nature.

Since 1998 A. Selas had already been advising, in the vineyard and in the winery, his father Joaquim Rama and later Jorge Rama, having restructured part of the vineyard and refined the preparation of sparkling wine. Currently, the exploited vineyard area has about 15ha, based on strongly calcareous, somewhat stony, clayey-calcareous and franco-sandy soils, in two distinct vineyard spots. The white varieties are Chardonnay, Bical, Arinto and Sauvignon Blanc; the red varieties are Baga, Touriga Nacional, Merlot, Syrah, Pinot Noir, Cabernet Sauvignon and Tinta Roriz.

António A. Coelho Selas was born in Mealhada and although he was born in a restaurant in Mealhada that his parents owned, from an early age he took a liking to the "atmosphere" of the Bairrada wineries, accompanying his father in the frequent visits he made with customers. Thus, he graduated in Agronomy in the specialty of Food Industries and in 1981 and as an oenologist, after having trained and worked at the Estação Vitivinícola in Anadia until 1984, he soon began to work as a consultant in wineries, cooperatives and producers especially in Bairrada. Later, also as the person responsible for viticulture, he accompanied and still accompanies some exports.

From the work in viticulture and oenology that he was developing, the will put into practice in 1993, led him to plant his own first vineyard and in 1996 he bottled his first Bairrada sparkling wine under the brand name Milheiro Selas, the name of his three sons. The evolution and the will to consolidate the project as a winegrower, which was joined by his son António in 2005, led to the vineyard area being today 14.5ha. The grape varieties are Chardonnay, Arinto, Fernão Pires and Cerceal; the red varieties are Touriga Nacional, Baga, Syrah, Merlot and Pinot Noir.

The will to do better in each other's wine activity led Jorge Rama and António Selas to set up a joint project with a dimension and profitability that would allow their wines, by joining the synergies of their different knowledge and working capacities, to face the market with new strength and naturally be able to make the effort developed profitable.
